Help Me Transition: From Jen's Corner

Hi there! I’m Jen.

So you’ve made the BIG decision to let go of the relaxers and embrace the natural texture of your hair. Congrats!

And now here you are on this odd little island called “Transitioning” Oooo, what’s that? For those who don’t know (because I surely didn’t understand all of this hair terminology! I still don’t know it all!), one is transitioning when they still have chemically altered/relaxed hair ends while growing out their natural hair. So basically, two totally different textures are competing on your scalp right now!

Let me start out with this….

DISCLAIMER

I am also very new to this game! June will be my 1 year hair anniversary so I’m still learning the ropes. That said, I am FAR from an expert.

Also, I am Not what you’d call creative when it comes to hair styles! Give me an updo with some curls and I am a happy girl. When Kendra asked me to write this,

I was like, “Uhhhh, I’m not the one to ask! I don’t have a lot of styles! ” But here I am! 

SO! I wet my hair completely. Water is your friend, people! Your hair loves it and it makes it more pliable, which is super important to curling it. I like conditioner washing (cowashing), some people don’t. This is just rubbing some conditioner in your hair and rinsing it out since shampooing frequently strips hair of its natural oils. Cowashing is great but I also shampoo weekly with Shea Moisture Coconut & Hibiscus Curling Control Shampoo to get rid of any product buildup.

After I towel blot my hair a just a little bit, I use a cream moisturizer and smooth it on the strands. I then seal in the moisture with oil. I’ve used coconut oil and olive oil and they’ve both worked fine for me.

I use rollers! Some people can’t sleep in them but they don’t bother me anymore. Flexirods are a great alternate since they are soft and they work! I didn’t think they would curl my hair but they truly do!

To add some definition to my curls, I use this tongue twister of a product: Kinky Curly Curling Custard. It’s alcohol-free and all natural. At $16 for an 8oz jar, it’s not a cheap product but it’s my only “splurge” because it’s worth it and that one jar lasts for a long while! I put a tiny dab on each section of hair before I roll it into the roller. Key word is Tiny! Too much will give you crunchy hair.

So I roll all of my hair, toss on my silk scarf and go to sleep!

My BFF hair accessory is the Banana Clip. Behold:

I just basically remove the rollers, finger comb the curls towards the middle of my scalp and then clip it with the banana clip. The End. I usually also add some twists to the front. See below:

Also, my mom braided my hair for me the other day and I think it will be a perfect alternative style for me, as I will be frolicking in the sand and the ocean waves later this week!

Just some final thoughts:

People will wonder if you’ve lost your mind. I mean, how DARE you decide to let your hair grow out your head without chemically altering it?! You have some nerve! I say, just brush them off your shoulder.

You follow YOUR convictions, not the opinion of others. If people would rather that you walk around with damaged hair only to appease our society’s standards of beauty, that’s their business. When you have awesome, healthy hair and lots of growth, they will have to eat their words!

Remember that God Don’t Make Mistakes. Yeah, the grammar makes me cringe too but this has become my mantra. He made people with super straight hair and He also made people with extremely curly hair. Why? I dunno. But we’d be pretty boring if we all looked the same, right? Sometimes it will be frustrating but as long as you know that He made us the way we are for a reason, we can learn to accept His craftsmanship!
