Hair Tip #20: 5 Ways to Protect Your Hair in the Summer

In sunny southern California the warm weather is already rolling in! Although we are barely in the beginning of May, we have already hit a high of 97 degrees this week! It is a more than appropriate time to talk about a summer hair  regimen. I am going to educate you on 5 ways to protect your hair in the summer.

1. Moisturize

With the high UV rays and intense heat, you want to focus on keeping your hair moisturized! Perhaps consider switching to a thicker leave in conditioner for days you will be in the sun for long periods of time.

2. Deep Condition

It is very important that you deep condition every 2 weeks! You want to keep your hair as strong as possible. Especially your ends. You don't want them to get too weathered.

3. Protect Against Chlorine and Salt Water

Going to the pool or the ocean, be aware that chlorine and salt suck moisture out of your hair! Before you go swimming, consider rinsing your hair and applying conditioner. Put your hair up up- either a bun, twists, braids, ponytail, etc - because if you leave it down it will get very tangled! Once you are done swimming, rinse out the conditioner with the coolest water you can stand! This will close the cuticle.

4. Drink Water

This will help your hair and skin retain moisture. Plus, on a health wise note, dehydration and heat stroke are very real and common. If you are planning to be in the sun for a long period of time, drink water before you get out there. And continue drinking throughout the day! Don't like the "bland" taste of water? Opt for a flavored water such as Propel!

5. Cover Your Head in Style

This is not necessary but it helps if you can :) Cover your hair with a cute scarf or hat when you are going out in the sun. Not only is it preventative but it is also very cute and fashionable. Here are some cute sets from Polyvore!! This will hopefully give you some ideas!
